Letter From Counseling
August 10, 2020
Dear SOAR Families,
We hope this letter finds you and your children safe, healthy, and excited to start the new school year! As we begin the
school year in a full distance learning model, the SOAR Counseling Department will be mostly working remotely. We want
to assure you that we are here to support the academic, social/emotional, and college/career needs of your student during
this time. Over the past few months, we have collaborated with our SOAR faculty and staff to prepare information,
resources, and creative ways to stay connected with you this school year. The main purpose of this letter is to provide
information on the various ways that you and your student can connect with us, as well as participate in learning
opportunities via online platforms.
SOAR High School Counseling Department is available in the following ways:
- Virtual One-to-One Meetings using the Google Meet or Zoom virtual platform. Students, parents, and staff can schedule meetings with Mrs. Moya or Mrs. Chainey using the youcanbook.me links provided below.
- Via Email - students, parents, and staff can email their School Counselor directly using the email address provided below. Please allow 24 hours for a response M-F and up to 72 hours if your email is sent over the weekend.
- Via Phone or Text - students, parents, and staff can call or text our dedicated SOAR Counseling Office line at 661-235-5738.
- Request We Contact You - Ask for us to contact you using our Google Check-in request by visiting https://tinyurl.com/SOARcheck
- Additionally, your student has been enrolled in a grade-level Google Classroom where we will post “Monthly Bulletins” that address frequently asked questions (FAQs), provide resources, outlines weekly virtual office hours, and gives updates on policies and relevant changes to academic, college & career, and social & emotional subjects.

ATTENDANCE
California school law requires that a student attend school regularly and punctually. The only legal absences by the State of California are (a) illness; (b) quarantine; (c) doctor or dental appointment; (d) funeral in the immediate family (parents, siblings, and grandparents). Days allowed for missing school: (1); out of area (3); out of state (5); (e) juvenile court appointments. Students will be assigned Saturday School for having uncleared absences.
The procedure for reporting or verifying a student’s absence is as follows:
1. Parents call the office within 3 school days.
2. Student brings an absence note from the parent to the office upon return or a parent email to jandrews@avhsd.org.
3. After an absence of three consecutive days or more, a doctor’s note indicating a diagnosis is required to clear an absence.
WE ARE A CLOSED CAMPUS. Students are not allowed to leave campus once they arrive/are dropped off by parents until the end of the school day.
Health
HEALTH AND EMERGENCY POLICY
If a student is injured or becomes ill at school, every effort will be made to notify the parents. If the parents cannot be reached, then the “designated-to-be-called” person(s) will be notified in the case of an emergency. Parents and students are asked to inform the school of any changes regarding telephone numbers, places of work, or emergency contacts.
The office must also receive a written statement from the physician detailing the method, amount, and time schedules by which any medication is to be taken, and a written statement from the parent/guardian indicating that they desire the school district to assist their student in the matter set forth by the physician. Student must check all prescription medication into the office. Students are not allowed to carry medication of any kind while on campus (Education Code: 49423). If your student has a chronic or acute health condition which may affect them at school, please contact the District Nurse 661-726-7649 ext. 731 or email gchandler@avhsd.org.
